Coach Registration

The Coach Registration process through Backspin helps parish programs manage volunteer onboarding, clearance tracking, and seasonal coaching assignments through a centralized Diocese-wide system.

All coaches and volunteers must complete the required registration and clearance process before participating in CYO activities involving athletes.

Quick Summary

Coaches and volunteers are required to:

  • Create a Backspin profile
  • Sign up for a role each season
  • Complete required clearance items
  • Maintain an active coaching card before working with athletes

Creating a Volunteer Profile

Each volunteer begins by creating a profile in Backspin. This profile is used to:

  • Register for coaching and volunteer roles
  • Complete required forms and acknowledgements
  • Track clearance requirements
  • Upload required documents
  • View coaching card and eligibility status

Volunteers should continue using the same account from season to season so their records and certifications remain connected to their profile.

Seasonal Role Selection

Before each season, volunteers select the role they intend to serve for their parish program.

Examples may include:

  • Head Coach
  • Assistant Coach
  • Team Parent
  • Scorekeeper or Gym Volunteer

Role selection helps parish administrators determine which requirements apply to each volunteer.

Clearance Requirements

Depending on the volunteer’s role and clearance history, requirements may include:

  • Completion of the CYO Volunteer Application
  • Livescan fingerprinting
  • Safe Environment training through Virtus
  • Signed acknowledgements and policy documents
  • Additional parish or Diocese-specific requirements

Backspin tracks the status of these requirements and provides visibility to both volunteers and administrators throughout the process.

Coaching Cards

Once all required items have been completed and verified, eligible coaches may receive a CYO Coaching Card.

Athletic directors and authorized administrators can access and download coaching cards directly through the system.

All coaches must have a valid coaching card in their possession while participating in CYO activities involving athletes.

Benefits of Centralized Coach Registration

The centralized process helps parish programs:

  • Maintain consistent clearance standards
  • Simplify volunteer onboarding
  • Reduce manual paperwork and tracking
  • Improve communication with volunteers
  • Monitor coaching eligibility in real time
  • Maintain organized records from season to season
